Lay Theng Gan

Gastroenterologist, Newcastle, Australia

About me

I am a senior staff specialist gastroenterologist and hepatologist at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, Australia.

Here, I work with a team of staff, by running clinics, performing procedures, and following up both inpatients & outpatient treatment.

I run a weekly general gastroenterology clinic, seeing patients with a variety of gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, oesophageal disorders, bowel cancer screening, and surveillance. We run 2–3 liver clinics a month to manage ailments such as viral hepatitis and fatty liver disease. I also have a highly-specialised multidisciplinary clinic to manage end-stage liver disease, in conjunction with an experienced hepatology nurse, dietitian & social worker.

Additionally, I have weekly rooms at Hunter Gastroenterology. I perform gastroscopies and colonoscopies at Hunter Valley Private Hospital (Shortland), Newcastle Endoscopy Centre (Charlestown), Ramsay Surgical Centre (Charlestown), Lingard Day Centre (Merewether). Click on the links for contact details.

I graduated from the University of Tasmania. Then worked in Launceston, Newcastle, the RPA in Sydney, and briefly in Canberra. Besides general gastroenterology, my clinical interests are: hepatology (liver treatment and research) and inflammatory bowel disease.
